Meet our Artist Educator

  • That early fascination naturally evolved into a passion for fused glass. What makes this connection meaningful is that quartz crystals and most rocks are formed from the same core elements as glass. In nature, heat and pressure transform elements into extraordinary gems over millions of years. In the studio, the kiln uses heat and gravity to melt and shape the glass elements into new compositions of color and form. Gem Fired brings those parallel processes together, uniting earth formed stone and kiln formed glass through artistry and inspiration.

    As an educator, Matthew loves guiding individuals and groups through hands on creative experiences. Each project is thoughtfully designed to be accessible and adaptable for all ages and skill levels, whether someone is discovering fused glass for the first time or creating something deeply personal.

    For those drawn to religious or spiritual themes, Matthew also brings a rich background in Jewish and religious thought, helping participants infuse tradition, symbolism, and meaning into their work. At Gem Fired, creativity is about transformation, honoring the materials of the earth and shaping them into something lasting and meaningful.

  • As a small, hands-on operation, we take the time to understand what you’re looking for and tailor each experience to you. From adapting projects for different ages to customizing crystal boxes, we offer personal attention and flexibility.

  • Each experience is created specifically for you or your group.

    Glass projects and lessons are created in conversation with you to engage the participants in meaningful art and learning.

    Crystals are primarily found by Matt or selected for their unique beauty, character, and energy. We don’t use mass-produced or overly common crystals—no basic selenite or small tumbled rose quartz as the main feature. As a small, hands-on operation, we curate each collection with attention to your needs, interests, and the stories behind each stone.

  • We take great care in how we collect and select our crystals. Many of the stones we offer were collected directly from the East Coast of the United States. Matthew has spent countless days in the Herkimer region of Upstate New York, carefully breaking hard dolomite rock to reveal the Herkimer Diamond crystals hidden inside. He also collected in localities in the Mid-Atlanta and Southern states.

    All of our outside sourcing partners are known for responsible practices. Every crystal comes with information about where it was found so you can feel confident in its origin and the care that went into bringing it to you.

    Our commitment is simple: crystals gathered with integrity, intention, and a deep appreciation for the earth.
